One year on in Stornoway
Just over a year on from the acquisition of Young's Seafood's Stornoway facility, Macduff Shellfish is making significant progress.
Roy Cunningham, managing director of Macduff, says:
"We saw the opportunities as two-fold: to use Stornoway to build relationships with fishermen on the Western Isles and to invest in the factory to achieve sustainable and profitable growth.
"What has surprised us is the speed with which progress has been made in both of these ambitions. A very receptive fishing community - fuelled by Duncan McInnes of the Western Isles Fishermen's Association - and an extremely positive local authority - Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar - has made all the difference here."
- A partnership approach between Macduff and Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar, with practical assistance from the Western Isles Fishermen's Association, has helped to modernise the current aging fleet and brought four new vessels to the Western Isles
- Macduff has expanded its langoustine buying in the Western Isles and now also buys scallops, whelks and crabs from the fishermen
- The factory has seen record volumes of shellfish being processed on the Island and increased staff numbers to help it cope during the summer. As well as processing langoustine, the team is schuking scallops.
